Cool Ubud Events You Should Know About

Ubud has something for almost every kind of traveler. If you want to walk through open rice fields with cool morning air around you, head to Tegalalang. For those looking a quiet space to slow down and reset can easily find yoga classes and meditation sessions across town. Art and culture lovers can also explore galleries, traditional performances, and craft markets waiting around most corners.

Beyond the places to visit, Ubud also has a calendar full of experiences worth showing up for. Here are some cool Ubud event experiences you should know about.

Kecak Fire Dance

This is one of the most memorable things you can witness in Ubud. A large circle of men perform rhythmic chanting while dancers tell the story of the Ramayana, all lit by open flames as night falls. The combination of movement, fire, and sound creates something that is hard to describe and even harder to forget.

Performances are held regularly at open-air venues around Ubud, including near Ubud Palace. Arrive at least 30 minutes early to get a good seat. Light clothing works fine but brings a light layer for the evening air.

Nyepi Eve Ogoh Ogoh Parade

Ogoh Ogoh Parade

Nyepi is unlike any other Ubud event you will experience anywhere in the world. The entire island goes silent for a full day. Tourists are expected to stay indoors and maintain silence as well.

The night before, Ogoh-Ogoh parades fill the streets with enormous demon effigies carried through villages before being ceremonially burned. The atmosphere becomes lively and exciting as local communities participate together. Plan your accommodation well in advance if you want to be in Ubud for this one. This event usually happens in March depending on the Balinese calendar.

Galungan and Kuningan Festival

Galungan and Kuningan celebrate the victory of good over evil in Balinese Hindu tradition. During this period the streets are decorated with beautiful penjor bamboo poles. Temples become more active and traditional ceremonies take place across the village. This Ubud event happens every 210 days according to the Balinese calendar. Visitors should wear modest clothing when entering temple areas.

Ubud Village Temple Ceremonies

Many village temples hold ceremonies and celebrations throughout the year. Traditional music, colorful offerings, and ceremonial clothing create a unique cultural experience. While schedules vary, these events allow visitors to witness daily spiritual life in Bali. Respectful clothing such as a sarong and sash is highly recommended.
